The Program Educator directly contributes to Apple Seeds’ mission by leading hands-on, engaging, and empowering curriculum to several thousand students throughout the calendar year. The person in this role will excite students about fresh, nutrient-dense food and its journey from the ground to the plate! This enthusiasm will be part of various programs including field trips, cooking classes, after school programs, summer camps, and in-school programs. The Program Educator should anticipate that the primary function of the job is actively teaching and leading students in programs. This is anticipated to be roughly 70% of the position during program weeks.

The Program Educator will also be involved in general program support tasks, survey administration and analysis, providing direction and guidance to interns and volunteers; budget tracking; and community outreach. The Program Educator is supervised by the Program Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the delivery of hands-on and engaging garden, nutrition, and culinary program curricula 

  • Foster a fun, safe, and encouraging environment for program participants in accordance with Apple Seeds policies and protocols

  • Communicate with program partners for designated programs regarding scheduling and any additional items that need to be completed prior to the program

  • Support program implementation through tasks including organization/preparation of materials, creating rosters of participants, purchasing ingredients, and leading program/kitchen set up and closing procedures following each program

  • Train and support interns, team members, and volunteers on designated program curricula, logistics, and Apple Seeds policies and procedures

  • Organize, track, and analyze program data including participation numbers, survey data, and program implementation timelines to be used for reporting and program planning

  • Regularly assess, identify, and implement opportunities for improvement of programs

  • Utilize and manage assigned operational budgets according to Apple Seeds policies

The Program Educator will collaborate with the Apple Seeds team on organization-wide initiatives, including team-building activities, fundraising, and providing support to other teams. Additional duties may be assigned as needed. The role may evolve as determined by the Program Director and Executive Director in response to the organization's growth and changing needs.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Passion for the mission of Apple Seeds and a commitment to the values of the organization which are respect, belonging, authenticity, engagement, and growth

  • A minimum of 1 year of full-time experience working with children in an educational setting

  • Experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

In addition to the above skills and qualifications, the ideal candidate will have:

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to work with a diverse group of students, teachers, volunteers, community partners, and other stakeholders; experience delivering presentations preferred

  • An energetic personality that thrives leading and exciting students about nutrition, cooking, and gardening

  • Strong organization and attention to detail skills to coordinate and track multiple projects and communications concurrently

  • Self-motivation and self-direction to prioritize and carry out tasks efficiently and within established timeframes

  • Ability to adapt and work well within a rapidly-changing environment

  • An openness and drive for learning, assessing and improving one’s work, and the ability to hear, reflect upon and implement feedback

  • A positive, team focused, energetic, and solutions oriented attitude with excitement towards helping grow Apple Seeds’ programs

  • Proficiency in Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office

  • Fluency in Spanish and/or Marshallese is welcomed skillset but is not required for this position

Additional Job Requirements:

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and a willingness to drive Apple Seeds’ vehicles

  • Agree to and pass a criminal background check

  • Willingness to work outside in hot and cool conditions

  • Ability to support program development and implementation, including standing for extended periods, working at a computer for multiple hours, and lifting up to 40 lbs.

  • Ability and willingness to use a personal phone for work-related communications when necessary

Hours:

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week; standard work hours are 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday

  • The Program Educator will frequently have an adjusted work schedule due to job responsibilities that occur in the evenings, early mornings, or on weekends. Exact times vary per season and the programs that are scheduled. 

Benefits:

  • Annual salary of $37,800

  • Full-time employees are eligible for health insurance after 60 days, with Apple Seeds covering 50% of the premium. Additional family members can be added at extra cost. Vision and Dental Benefits are included.

  • SIMPLE IRA with a 3% employer match

  • Benefits include 15 days of paid vacation/personal leave, 14 days of holiday vacation, and up to 6 days of paid sick leave annually
